How to obtain Dual Citizenship (Mexico) by descent if you’re in the United States

What are the different ways to obtain Dual Citizenship (Mexico) from the United States?

This is meant specifically for folks who were born in the United States (or any other country) to Mexican parents or grandparents.  You can claim your Mexican nationality by descent* without a lawyer.  I started Dual Citizenship Mexico to help folks who find it difficult to navigate the system or who simply don’t have the time to. Don’t let anyone fool you, though - there’s a lot of scammers out there - if you want to, it is something you can totally do on your own.

If you are of Mexican descent, you are entitled to Mexican citizenship by birthright. However, knowing how to claim that birthright often feels harder than keeping up with the payaso de rodeo at your prima’s quince. For starters - you’re not actually “applying” for citizenship, you are claiming what is called, in Spanish, a Registro de Nacimiento or Inscripción de Acta de Nacimiento Extranjera (Birth Registration or Registration of Foreign Birth).  This is why you don’t need a lawyer for this.  Don’t let the scammers scam ya, mi gente.  You just need to have the right paperwork and once you file, you will receive a Mexican Birth Certificate which will clearly state you were actually born outside of Mexico, but that is how it's documented. With this Mexican Birth Certificate you will be able to apply for your INE Credencial Para Votar (basically your Mexican I.D./Voter Card), your Mexican Passport, get your CURP, buy property, and all the other dope things you’re trying to do with your newly unlocked citizenship.

So how does it work?

There’s essentially three ways to do it if you are in the U.S. - listed here in order of expense:

  1. Do it yourself at a Mexican Consulate (Consulado Mexicano) in the U.S.

$FREE.99: Well, free-ish - it depends on how much you value your own time.

  2. Get someone in your family IN MEXICO to do it for you

Less Free: It can be processed for free at any Registro Civil office, but you will still have to mail your documents to them and pay to get them translated with a certified translator that is approved by them

  3. Pay us to do it for you!

$325 USD: For one flat fee of $325, we process it for you here in Mexico City. We go through exactly what documents you need to send us, we help you obtain anything you don’t have yet, we get your documents translated and we mail you your fresh spankin’ new Mexican Birth Certificate when its all done.

    or
$100 USD: Given the current political climate (ahem… fuck trump, fuck borders, abolish ICE) the consulados are BUUUUSSSYYY right now. Even just getting an appointment can be annoying af. We also have a lower tier where we offer to keep refreshing that appointments page for you (so you can keep doomscrolling or binge-watching Stranger Things) AND we will review all your paperwork and help you get anything you might still need so you’re extra ready for your appointment to face the poor overworked folks at the Mexican Consulate. Be kind! We’re all just out here trying to survive.

So do it yourself, have your tia in el rancho do it, or pay us to do it for you. Whatever you decide, just remember to resist fascism no matter where you are and be kind to the waitstaff.

We navigate the bureaucracy so you don’t have to.

*by descent: Individuals born in the United States or in any other country, who are children of a Mexican father or mother, are entitled to register for Mexican nationality.  If it is a grandparent who is/was Mexican, you can still get yours, but first you have to register your parent(s), and then you can do yours.

5 Reasons Your Dual Citizenship Will Be DENIED (and how to fix them)

It All Begins Here

  • Reason 1: The "Ma." vs "Maria" Trap. Mismatching names from one document to the other will get your application rejected.

  • Reason 2: The "Tattered Document" Rule (Consulates hate torn papers). Even though it is within your rights, staff at the consulates sometimes make up their own standards.

  • Reason 3: The "Long Form" vs "Short Form" Birth Certificate. You have to know which is the right one.

  • Reason 4: The Estranged Parent. Again - consulates can make their own rules. An adult applying for dual citizenship is not required to have a parent present, but some consulate offices are still requiring it. With our full service option, you can skip that coin toss altogether.

  • Reason 5: The Appointment Mismatch (Booking the wrong type of appointment). The appointments for Dual Citizenship at the consulates are limited and only released at certain times of the week or month, depending on the consulate office location. They will turn you away if you book the wrong type of appointment.
